Popular Alternative Healing Options

Prior to our current medical system (known as 'allopathic' medicine) taking hold, people maintained physical and emotional health through a variety of methods. These days, many people still choose to employ these alternative healing methods, either because standard medicine has failed them or just because they prefer the more natural character of the traditional methods. There are many different healing practices that can be described as 'alternative'. Here are examples of a few of them:

Reiki is a practice that has become quite popular recently. The purpose of this modality is to balance the energy flow within and around our bodies. Reiki teaches that this energy makes up the basis of all matter. Followers say that when the source of the energy is diverted or hampered in some way, we can begin to experience problems with our health. Therefore, the Reiki practicioner seeks to restore or maintain the balance.

The use of herbs may very well be the most popular type of alternative healing practiced today. Many believe that availing themselves of nature's plentiful bounty is preferable to using something manufactured by a big pharmaceutical firm. Volumes have been written about the healing qualities of herbs and their usage to treat a variety of problems. For example, herbalists recommend trying red clover and scullcap to combat skin disorders like acne. To assist with optimal eyesight, the use of bayberry and lady's slipper is advised. Indigestion is said to be relieved by ginger, peppermint, and parsley.

Lastly, yoga has become tremendously popular for many reasons, not just its feasibility as an alternative healing modality. Practitioners believe that yoga practice can help us reconnect the spirit with the body, uniting our physical and spiritual selves, thereby allowing us to maintain physical and mental health and affording us the ability to heal from within.

With the popularity of these and other alternative medicine options, there's a great deal of information easily available. If you're interested, you can find great quantities of information online and in books and magazines. Remember that many health food stores will be able to refer you to qualified practicioners, but be sure to do some research on your own before following any recommended techniques.
